## What Makes an Icon Retro

A retro icon looks like it came from an older era. Streamline draws two sets in this style, and they take that idea in different directions.

Pixel is built from squares. It is inspired by the work of Susan Kare, who drew the icons for the first Macintosh. Cyber has no curves at all, only straight lines and sharp angles, in a look borrowed from science fiction.

## Why Pixel Art Came Back

Pixel art never really left. Games like Stardew Valley, Undertale, and Minecraft kept it in front of players who were born long after the 80s.

It also looks handmade. Someone placed every square by hand, and you can see that in the finished icon.

## What to Use With Retro Icons

Icons are one part of a design. Streamline draws matching elements for the rest. Retro Shapes has 450 shapes with an 80s look, in Line, Filled, and Pattern.

Cyber GUI Elements has 445 shapes, arrows, charts, and frames for sci-fi dashboards. Vintage Patterns and Vintage Illustrations go back further, to printed books and posters.

## Frequently asked questions

Quick answers about retro icon sets, licensing, and formats.

### What are retro icons?

A retro icon looks like it came from an older era. Streamline has two retro sets. Pixel is built from squares, like the graphics in 80s arcade games. Cyber uses only straight lines and sharp angles, a look taken from science fiction.

### Where can I download retro icon sets?

Pixel is at [streamlinehq.com/icons/pixel](https://www.streamlinehq.com/icons/pixel) and Cyber is at [streamlinehq.com/icons/cyber](https://www.streamlinehq.com/icons/cyber). Download as SVG to keep the color editable, or PNG for a ready-to-use image.

### Are retro icons free?

Pixel is 662 icons, free and open source. Cyber gives you 500 free icons per style, and Pro opens up 3,695+ icons per style on top of that.

### Which retro style should I use?

Pick Pixel for games, arcade interfaces, and anything that should read as 8-bit. Pick Cyber Line for dashboards, music apps, and sci-fi interfaces. Cyber Duotone adds a second color when one flat color is not carrying enough meaning.

### Can I use retro icons commercially?

Yes, for personal and commercial projects. The free sets are licensed under Creative Commons BY 4.0, which asks for attribution. Pro removes the attribution requirement.

### Do retro icons work at small sizes?

Cyber is drawn on a 24px grid with a 1px stroke, so it holds up in interface work. Pixel is built from squares, so it reads best when you scale it in whole multiples and avoid blurring the grid.

### What pairs well with retro icons?

For the scene around the icons, try [Retro Shapes](https://www.streamlinehq.com/elements/retro-shapes) for 80s volumetric forms, or [Cyber GUI Elements](https://www.streamlinehq.com/elements/cyber-gui-elements) for futuristic interface parts. For an older kind of retro, [Vintage Patterns](https://www.streamlinehq.com/elements/vintage-patterns) reaches back to print.
