## The five rules every icon is drawn against

Streamline's own published standard for what a good icon has to do.

| | What it means |
| ---------- | --------------------------------------------------- |
| Universal | Reads the same across cultures and contexts |
| Simple | Stripped of irrelevant detail, short of abstraction |
| Legible | Survives reduction, still reads at small sizes |
| Nonverbal | Avoids letters, which tie an icon to one language |
| Consistent | Built on defined construction rules across the set |

## A marketplace or a studio?

The difference shows up in consistency, coverage, and what happens after launch.

| | Marketplace | Streamline |
| ------------------------- | ------------------------------- | --------------------------------- |
| Who draws the icons | Many sellers, varying standards | One in-house team of 8 |
| Consistency across a set | Varies by contributor | Reviewed and harmonized |
| Coverage of rare concepts | Gaps are common | Built to cover the whole use case |
| After launch | Often never updated again | Ultimate redrawn five times |
| Missing an icon | Find another seller | Drawn for you at no extra cost |

## What the standard buys you

### No Mixing, No Tweaking

Streamline exists because its founder got tired of stitching sets together from different creators and editing each icon to match. A complete set removes that step entirely.

### Maintained, Not Abandoned

Plenty of icon sets launch and are never expanded again. These get returned to and improved, which is what makes them worth building a product on.

## Premium Is a Standard, Not a Price

Streamline publishes the standard it designs against: an icon should be universal, simple, legible, nonverbal, and consistent. Those five rules are the whole definition of quality here.

The studio's own summary of it is that form follows function. If an icon is simple, recognizable, and carries a real message, it will inevitably be beautiful.

## Why the Sets Are Drawn In-House

Most icon marketplaces are exactly that: a marketplace, with many sellers and standards that move from one contributor to the next. Streamline took the opposite route and kept everything in-house with one team of veteran designers.

That is what makes true consistency possible, because every icon is reviewed and harmonized against the others rather than merely accepted. 16 years of doing it the slow way is the reason the sets match.

## Where the Whole Thing Started

Vincent Le Moign had been doing web and interface design since 1998, and redrawing icons for every project was the part that never stopped being repetitive.

Buying packs did not fix it. The right icon was hard to find, the sets were too small, and the styles did not match, so he ended up mixing sets from different creators and tweaking each one. Streamline began as the framework he built to stop doing that.

## Quality That Stays Bought

An icon set is only as good as its upkeep. Many sets launch, get some attention, and are never expanded or maintained again, which leaves the products built on them stranded.

Ultimate has been redrawn five times since it first launched. The intent is that the assets stay useful, consistent, and maintained year after year.

## Frequently asked questions

Quick answers about what premium quality means in icon design.

### What makes an icon premium quality?

Craft rather than price. Streamline designs against five rules: an icon should be universal, simple, legible, nonverbal, and consistent. A set that holds all five across thousands of icons is the hard part.

### How is this different from an icon marketplace?

A marketplace collects work from many sellers, so standards shift between contributors. Streamline is drawn entirely in-house by one team of 8 designers, and every icon is reviewed and harmonized against the rest of the set.

### Are premium icons worth paying for?

It depends on whether consistency matters to your project. Streamline's free tier is 109,582 icons across 34 families, which is enough to judge the quality before paying anything.

### Do the sets get updated after launch?

Yes. The team returns to older icons and improves them. Ultimate has been redrawn five times since it originally launched.

### What if the icon I need does not exist?

If a concept genuinely is not in the library, the design team will draw it for you at no additional cost.

### Where can I see the quality for myself?

Start with the free tier at [streamlinehq.com/icons](https://www.streamlinehq.com/icons). The free sets are drawn to the same standard as the paid ones, which is the point of making them generous.
