## Get an icon in three steps

### Pick a shape that survives 20px

Confluence renders a custom emoji at 20 pixels square whatever you upload. Simple, bold shapes read there.

### Export PNG with transparency

Custom emoji accept JPG, PNG or GIF up to 1MB. PNG keeps the background transparent so the icon sits on any page colour.

### Upload it as a custom emoji

Add it once and it is available to everyone in the space, which is what makes a documented status system stick.

## Micro

A 10px grid, the smallest in any commercial icon set.

### Micro

Micro is built on a tiny 10px grid, with no room for unnecessary detail. Every stroke serves legibility. 200 free icons across 2 styles.

* **Micro Line**: [200 free icons](https://www.streamlinehq.com/icons/micro-line-free), [2,035 pro icons](https://www.streamlinehq.com/icons/micro-line)
* **Micro Solid**: [200 free icons](https://www.streamlinehq.com/icons/micro-solid-free), [2,035 pro icons](https://www.streamlinehq.com/icons/micro-solid)

## Where Micro gets used

### Icons that behave like punctuation

Micro is drawn on a 10px grid for inline text actions, data tables, chips, filters and breadcrumbs. It is the only family built specifically to sit inside a line of text rather than beside it.

### The density layer, not the whole system

Micro works best alongside a primary family: Core or Ultimate handles navigation and onboarding, Micro handles tables and inline actions. Used alone above 20px the simplification reads as unfinished.

## Core

The Helvetica of icons, on a 14px grid. Free and pro counts per style.

### Core

Core is the Helvetica of icons, stripped to its essential form with generous spacing. 998 free icons across 8 styles.

* **Core Remix**: [998 free icons](https://www.streamlinehq.com/icons/core-remix-free), [5,615 pro icons](https://www.streamlinehq.com/icons/core-remix)

## Where Core gets used

### Where it is the wrong choice

Core Line contributes no personality by design, so a brand that needs the icons to carry identity will not get it here. At 64px and above the stripped-back construction starts to read as sparse rather than clean.

### Dashboards that should not have a point of view

Core is the Helvetica of icons: SaaS dashboards, admin panels, developer tools and settings screens, where the icons are infrastructure and the content is the thing. It works inside any design system without competing with it.

### Platforms other people build on

If third parties ship inside your product, an opinionated icon set becomes their problem as well as yours. Core stays neutral enough that a partner brand can sit next to it without a clash.

## Guidance

366 free icons drawn for signage and wayfinding.

### Guidance

Signage and wayfinding symbols, built for clear directional systems. 366 free icons, open source under Creative Commons BY 4.0.

* **Guidance**: [366 free icons](https://www.streamlinehq.com/icons/guidance)

## Where Guidance gets used

### Signage and physical wayfinding

Guidance is drawn for venue and transit navigation: airports, arenas, hospitals, and the companion apps that go with them. It is the set to reach for when an icon has to work on a wall as well as a screen.

### Accessibility and civic products

Universal, legally legible pictograms matter in healthcare, government and compliance documentation, where the icon is part of meeting a standard rather than part of the brand.

## Confluence renders every emoji at 20 pixels

Whatever the original file's dimensions, the emoji created will be 20 pixels by 20 pixels. Uploading a detailed illustration does not give you a detailed emoji, it gives you a smudge with a large file behind it.

That makes the choice of shape the whole decision. An icon drawn on a small grid keeps its silhouette at that size, and one drawn at 48px and scaled down loses the interior that made it recognisable.

## A status vocabulary people actually follow

Documentation systems fail when every author invents their own markers. A fixed set of custom emoji, drawn from one family and uploaded once, gives a space a shared vocabulary that survives the person who set it up.

No sign up required. Free downloads ask for attribution, a credit link wherever the icons appear, which Pro and Lifetime plans remove.

## Frequently asked questions

Quick answers about using these icons.

### How do I add a custom icon to Confluence?

Upload it as a custom emoji. Image files can be JPG, PNG or GIF up to 1MB, and the emoji is created at 20 by 20 pixels regardless of the source dimensions. Once added it is available across the space.

### What size should a Confluence custom emoji be?

The rendered size is fixed at 20 by 20 pixels, so design for that. Export a larger PNG, typically 80 or 160 pixels, and let Confluence scale it down, which gives a cleaner result than exporting at 20 directly.

### Which icon set works best for documentation?

Micro is drawn on a 10px grid specifically to hold its shape at the smallest sizes, which is exactly the Confluence emoji problem. Core works well for page graphics at larger sizes, and Guidance suits process and wayfinding diagrams.

### Are these icons free to use commercially?

Yes, on both tiers. 109,582 icons across 34 families are free, with no sign up required, and the free tier asks for attribution, a credit link wherever the icons appear. [Pro and Lifetime](https://www.streamlinehq.com/pricing) remove that and unlock 333,032 pro icons. See [SVG icons](/svg-icons.md) for the format itself.
