## The same styles, under different names

Icon libraries disagree on vocabulary. If a term here is the one you know, the right-hand column is what to search for on Streamline.

## Download a glyph icon in three steps

### Search for the icon

Real-time search across every family. Filter to a Solid style and you are looking at glyphs.

### Set one color

A glyph carries a single fill, which is what makes it simple to theme. Save your brand color and apply it to the set.

### Export as SVG or PNG

SVG keeps the fill editable, so one file serves light and dark themes. PNG bakes it in.

## Core Solid

998 free icons, 5,615 on Pro. The safe default glyph.

### Core

The Helvetica of icons, filled in. Built on a 14px grid, so it holds together in the small interface sizes glyphs are usually asked to survive.

* **Core Solid**: [998 free icons](https://www.streamlinehq.com/icons/core-solid-free), [5,615 pro icons](https://www.streamlinehq.com/icons/core-solid)

## Where Core Solid gets used

### Pair the glyph with its outline

The Core icons are legible at small size, perfect for small interface buttons. Line for the quiet button, Solid for the one you want pressed. The silhouettes line up because both are drawn on the same 14px grid.

## Micro Solid

200 free icons, 2,035 on Pro, on a 10px grid.

### Micro

Drawn on a 10px grid, the smallest in any commercial icon set. The glyph to reach for below 16px.

* **Micro Solid**: [200 free icons](https://www.streamlinehq.com/icons/micro-solid-free), [2,035 pro icons](https://www.streamlinehq.com/icons/micro-solid)

## Where Micro Solid gets used

### Small, filled, and sitting on color

Micro Solid on a watch face, knocked out in white on colored rows. At this size a filled shape is the only thing that survives, which is why wearable and menubar interfaces reach for glyphs almost exclusively.

## Sharp Solid

500 free icons, 5,616 on Pro. The hardest glyph in the library.

### Sharp

Pure geometry and bold structure. The hardest glyph in the library, and the one that suits technical and brutalist work.

* **Sharp Solid**: [500 free icons](https://www.streamlinehq.com/icons/sharp-solid-free), [5,616 pro icons](https://www.streamlinehq.com/icons/sharp-solid-style)

## Where Sharp Solid gets used

### Where glyphs do their best work, on dark

Lines replaced with filled shapes for bolder, instantly recognizable icons. Ideal where quick recognition is crucial, especially on dark backgrounds. Sharp Solid at poster scale, where the silhouette carries the composition.

## Plump Solid

500 free icons, 5,369 on Pro. Filled shapes at their most generous.

### Plump

Chunky and cartoon-inspired. Filled shapes at their most generous, for brands that want warmth rather than authority.

* **Plump Solid**: [500 free icons](https://www.streamlinehq.com/icons/plump-solid-free), [5,369 pro icons](https://www.streamlinehq.com/icons/plump-solid-style)

## Where Plump Solid gets used

### Large enough to be the artwork

Plump Solid is a set of chunky icons with friendly looks that uses subtle curves and a hand-drawn touch in its shapes. Blown up, a single glyph stops being interface furniture and becomes the image.

## Flex Solid

499 free icons, 5,615 on Pro. The organic silhouette, filled in.

### Flex

Inspired by nature's curves. The filled version keeps the organic silhouette, which reads friendlier than a geometric glyph.

## What a glyph icon actually is

A glyph icon is a solid, filled shape in a single color. The whole icon is one silhouette, which is why it survives being made small and why it themes with a single value.

The name comes from typography, where a glyph is one drawn character in a typeface. Icon libraries borrowed it for the same reason: a filled icon behaves like a letterform. It sits on a baseline, it takes a color the way text does, and it reads as a shape rather than a drawing.

## When a glyph beats an outline, and when it does not

Lines replaced with filled shapes for bolder, instantly recognizable icons. Ideal where quick recognition is crucial, especially on dark backgrounds. That is the case for tab bars, active states, small controls, and anything a reader glances at rather than studies.

The cost is detail and weight. A glyph cannot show interior structure, so a complex subject flattens into a blob. A screen full of them reads heavy. The usual answer is to run both: outline for the resting state, glyph for the selected one, from the same family so the shapes match.

## Frequently asked questions

Quick answers about glyph icons.

### What is a glyph icon?

A solid, filled shape in a single color. The term is borrowed from typography, where a glyph is one drawn character. In icon libraries it means the filled counterpart to a line icon, and most sets ship both so you can pair them.

### What is the difference between a glyph and a line icon?

Fill. A line icon is a hollow outline with negative space inside it; a glyph is the same silhouette filled in. Line icons carry more detail and feel lighter on a page. Glyphs are faster to recognise, hold together at small sizes, and stand out against dark backgrounds.

### Is a glyph the same as a solid icon?

Yes, they are the same thing under two names. Streamline calls this style Solid, and so do Material and most design systems. Flaticon and several stock libraries call it Glyph. If you are searching a library and cannot find glyphs, look for Solid or Filled instead. See [free symbols](/free-symbols.md) for the signage side of the same idea.

### Where can I download free glyph icons?

Every Streamline family with a Solid style is a glyph set. [Core Solid](https://www.streamlinehq.com/icons/core-solid-free) has 998 free icons and 5,615 on Pro, [Sharp Solid](https://www.streamlinehq.com/icons/sharp-solid-free) has 500 free, and [Micro Solid](https://www.streamlinehq.com/icons/micro-solid-free) has 200 free on a 10px grid for the smallest contexts. No sign up required.

### Should I use glyph icons for a whole interface?

Rarely. A full screen of filled icons reads heavy and flattens hierarchy, because everything is shouting at the same volume. The better pattern is to pair them: outline for inactive and resting states, glyph for active and selected. Take both from the same family and the silhouettes line up exactly.
