## Get an icon in three steps

### Find the icon you need

Real-time search across every family. A document set usually wants twenty or so icons used consistently throughout.

### Export as SVG

Word, PowerPoint, Excel and Outlook have supported SVG natively since Office 2016, on Windows and Mac.

### Insert, then recolour if you want

Insert then Pictures, or right-click and Convert to Shape to take the icon apart and recolour its pieces.

## Ultimate

## Where Ultimate gets used

### Where it is the wrong choice

Ultimate is rounded, which reads as approachable rather than precise. Medical devices, aerospace and audit software usually want sharp geometry, because austerity is the trust signal there. Below 14px it also gives way to a family drawn on a smaller grid.

### One system across every product surface

Ultimate is the safest default when a single icon set has to cover navigation, settings, onboarding and empty states without imposing a personality. Over 16,500 icons means coverage stops being the thing that blocks a release.

### Design systems serving several teams

Where a component library is used by more than one product team, mixing sources is the failure mode. Ultimate is built to be the one place everybody pulls from, so the icons still match two years and four teams later.

## Core

The Helvetica of icons, on a 14px grid. Free and pro counts per style.

### Core

Core is the Helvetica of icons, stripped to its essential form with generous spacing. 998 free icons across 8 styles.

## Where Core gets used

### Where it is the wrong choice

Core Line contributes no personality by design, so a brand that needs the icons to carry identity will not get it here. At 64px and above the stripped-back construction starts to read as sparse rather than clean.

### Dashboards that should not have a point of view

Core is the Helvetica of icons: SaaS dashboards, admin panels, developer tools and settings screens, where the icons are infrastructure and the content is the thing. It works inside any design system without competing with it.

### Platforms other people build on

If third parties ship inside your product, an opinionated icon set becomes their problem as well as yours. Core stays neutral enough that a partner brand can sit next to it without a clash.

## Guidance

366 free icons drawn for signage and wayfinding.

### Guidance

Signage and wayfinding symbols, built for clear directional systems. 366 free icons, open source under Creative Commons BY 4.0.

* **Guidance**: [366 free icons](https://www.streamlinehq.com/icons/guidance)

## Where Guidance gets used

### Signage and physical wayfinding

Guidance is drawn for venue and transit navigation: airports, arenas, hospitals, and the companion apps that go with them. It is the set to reach for when an icon has to work on a wall as well as a screen.

### Accessibility and civic products

Universal, legally legible pictograms matter in healthcare, government and compliance documentation, where the icon is part of meeting a standard rather than part of the brand.

## Word takes vector, and most people never use it

Word, PowerPoint, Outlook and Excel support inserting and editing SVG files, and have done since Office 2016\. An SVG placed in a document resizes with no loss of quality and prints at the resolution of the printer rather than the file.

The habit of pasting a screenshot of an icon is left over from a version of Office that has not shipped for a decade. The Graphics Format tab appears as soon as an SVG is selected.

## Convert to Shape is the part worth knowing

Right-click a placed SVG and choose Convert to Shape, and Word breaks it into its component shapes. From there each piece takes its own fill, which is how you get an icon that matches a document theme exactly rather than approximately.

It is a one-way door: once converted, the icon is Word shapes rather than an SVG. Keep the original file if you may need it again.

## Frequently asked questions

Quick answers about using these icons.

### Can Word insert SVG icons?

Yes, natively, since Office 2016 on Windows and Mac. Insert then Pictures, and pick the SVG. The icon stays vector, so it resizes without softening and prints at the printer's resolution rather than the file's.

### How do I change the colour of an icon in Word?

Select it and use the Graphics Format tab for a preset fill. For control over individual parts, right-click and choose Convert to Shape, which breaks the icon into shapes you can colour separately. Converting is one-way, so keep the original SVG.

### Should I use SVG or PNG in Word?

SVG for anything that will be printed or resized, since it stays sharp at any size. PNG only where the document has to open in a very old version of Office, or where the artwork is not vector to begin with.

### Are these icons free to use commercially?

Yes, on both tiers. 109,582 icons across 34 families are free, with no sign up required, and the free tier asks for attribution, a credit link wherever the icons appear. [Pro and Lifetime](https://www.streamlinehq.com/pricing) remove that and unlock 333,032 pro icons. See [SVG icons](/svg-icons.md) for the format itself.
