The second tone is doing a job, separating the subject from its container, or the active part from the frame around it. That is different from a multi-colour icon, which assigns a colour per element and reads as illustration. Duotone stays in the interface register, which is why it survives at sizes where a full-colour icon starts to look like a sticker. ## When two tones beat one Colored lines with filled shapes add depth and a clearer hierarchy. Good where you need to differentiate between actions using color, and where a single-colour set would make every item in a list look equally important. The cost is theming. A one-colour icon takes a brand colour and is done; a duotone icon needs two values that work together, and it needs them to work in dark mode as well.
