## Where these sets get used

### Retro and gaming contexts

Pixel is nostalgic and retro, inspired by the work of Susan Kare. Drawn on a pixel grid, it is the one style that gains something from being shown small rather than losing to it.

## What 8-bit actually refers to

The name comes from the hardware. Eight-bit consoles and home computers could hold very few colours and very few pixels per sprite, and designers worked inside that limit. The look we call 8-bit is what those constraints produced.

So an 8-bit icon is not a filter applied to a drawing. It is a drawing made the way those machines forced: on a small grid, with each pixel deliberate, and with the silhouette doing the work that detail cannot.

## Using it without it becoming a costume

Pixel will bring you back to the 80s, with retro charm inspired by the work of Susan Kare. That heritage is the appeal, and it is specific, so the style works where the nostalgia is the point and grates where it is decoration.

Gaming, streaming overlays, developer tools with a retro streak, and anywhere a product is leaning into its own history. Less good on a banking dashboard, where the era carries meaning nobody intended.

## What free covers

No sign up required. Free downloads ask for attribution, a credit link wherever the icons appear, which Pro and Lifetime plans remove. That is 109,582 free icons across 34 families, with 333,032 more on Pro.

Yes, you can use them for all personal and commercial projects. Each icon, free or premium, is optimized for large-size exports, ensuring visual clarity and sharpness. So, you can avoid pixelation or blur.

## Frequently asked questions

Quick answers about this style.

### What is an 8-bit icon?

An icon drawn in the style of eight-bit era games and computers: on a small pixel grid, with a limited palette and a strong silhouette. The name refers to the hardware whose limits produced the look.

### Is 8-bit the same as pixel art?

Close, and often used interchangeably. Pixel art is the broader technique of drawing on a pixel grid. 8-bit refers specifically to the era and the constraints of that hardware, so all 8-bit icons are pixel art but not all pixel art is 8-bit.

### Where can I download 8-bit icons free?

Streamline's Pixel set is 662 icons, entirely free and open source, drawn on a pixel grid with the retro charm of the era. No sign up required.

### Are these icons free to download?

Yes. 109,582 icons across 34 families are free, with no sign up required. Free downloads ask for attribution, a credit link wherever the icons appear, which [Pro and Lifetime](https://www.streamlinehq.com/pricing) plans remove. See [SVG icons](/svg-icons.md) for the format itself.
